Funk這個字是源自一個粗話"stink"，這個字是發出臭味的意思。它是R&B中最原始
的音樂型態。這種音樂的結構性十分不完整，在音樂的進行之中時常會有即興的演出，
且由於受到非洲音樂的影響，它使用了大量的切分音複合節奏，給了Funk一種動感跳躍
的感覺。它起初只對那些喜愛Hardcore R&B的聽眾有吸引力。Groove是Funk最重要的音
樂元素。Funk音樂中各個樂器的腳色通常是這樣的－電貝斯時常是扮演著演奏主要Riff
(音樂中一段重複的樂句，整個音樂以他為中心。)的工作，而吉他刷著短促的和絃再搭
配上響亮的管樂。不像其他從R&B衍伸出來的音樂型態，他並不把自己限制在
45-rpm single format和古典樂的曲式中。Funk樂團只是重複一段好聽的樂句或是藍調
樂曲，在加上一些等量的音樂片段，而為了不將groove破壞掉，他會用合聲來製造一些
高潮。在音樂的本質上，Funk有更多的自由度和即興創作，在這方面與當時其他的音樂
像是blues-rock, psychedelia和hard rock是類似的(事實上，Jimi Hendrix對Funk吉
他手的影響十分的大)。

Funk的元素在James Brown1965年之後所發行的專輯中開始出現，特別是
Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" (1965)和"Cold Sweat"(1967)這兩張專輯。
Sly & the Family Stone一開始是一個帶點搖滾和迷幻味道的靈魂樂樂團，而在1969年
Stand!這張專輯發行的時候他們已經變成一個成熟的Funk樂團了。然而，正式打開Funk
新紀元的歌曲是James Brown的曠世鉅作－Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine。
James Brown陸續出了許許多多的專輯，並且替另一位偉大的Funk祖師George Clinton
鋪路。
George Clinton的Parliament和Funkadelic樂團將Funk變成早期的派對音樂，這並
不單單由於他們獨特的風格，而是由於他們樂團中大量的樂手和舞者都盡期所能的在相
同的groove上即興的跳舞與演奏。由於Sly, Brown和Clinton的貢獻，從70年代開始，愈
來愈多R&B的新人或是老手開始接受Funk這種新的音樂型態。Funk在70年代中後期變的愈
來愈平滑，漸漸失去了他原本那種粗俗的感覺。而他也對爵士和fusion產生很大的影響，
並且變成嘻哈音樂基底。90年代由於白人聽眾的喜愛Funk又開始大鳴大放了。
